Preparing Kids for Success

Getting a good job in today's market is a challenge. Knowing what the future holds in terms of
employment and job security is also anybody's guess.

One thing is certain: Obtaining a good education that opens doors and broadens one's options is not something to be left solely in the hands of the schools and the educators. Parents are finding that in order to prepare their children for the future, they must become more proactive and creative with the education of their children.

For example, laying a solid and comprehensive foundation in math, reading, and writing is essential. At Math Magicians, we often encounter students, for example, in our SAT prep course with weak vocabulary and critical reading skills. These are difficult to remediate in a 16-hour course. However, if a student has had a rich history of reading classic literature in addition to being provided with opportunities to engage in activities such as literary analysis and writing, cooperative learning groups, and other enrichment activities that propagate critical thinking, they are much more prepared to not only get the competitive edge that prep courses can offer, but to also get a score on the exam that opens doors to scholarships, internships, and admission to top-notch colleges that otherwise would not be available to them.

Colleges and universities are looking for well-rounded and well-prepared students. They are interested in young men and women who have something to bring to the table that will ultimately help them maintain their reputation and status.

However, preparing your student to compete on college entrance exams is not the only end to the investment in their education early on. They will be better prepared to excel in whatever is placed in their hands. They will stand out at job interviews and for promotions. They will handle contracts and finances with much more understanding. They will be able to perpetuate their education through their children and their grandchildren.

The best way to prepare your child for success is to do just that: Prepare. Get them involved in activities that are educational. Visit universities and museums. Have them read classic literature or read it to them. Join teams such as Lego Robotics First teams. Put them in music lessons or art lessons. Enroll them in educational day camps through the city or private organizations. Discuss current events and cultural topics with them. Encourage your children to participate in essay-writing contests, speech contests, and spelling bees.

Math Magicians is dedicated to providing the enrichment education that is lacking in the schools today. During the summer through Labor Day, we offer a Preparing for Success Academy that concentrates on reading comprehension, writing, and math. We also offer Math Readiness classes, including Basic Math, Algebra 1 and 2, and Geometry, from 4 to 5 pm through the summer.

In addition, Math Magicians has a Lego First Robotics team starting in August. We offer tutoring in reading, math, and study skills throughout the entire year. The ReaderShip program is a specialized reading program that has grown tremendously because of its effectiveness and innovative approach.

Come in to Math Magicians or schedule an appointment to speak with Debbie Sinness, the CEO and founder, if you would like to discuss how Math Magicians and/or The ReaderShip can help prepare your student for success in school and in life. She can create with you a plan of action to address your student's individual needs.

Don't leave it to the schools. Become an active participant in your child's education and let us help you.
